rôtisserie romados

it was a glorious moment when fire was discovered and used to cook meat!  for the longest time, i have searched for the perfect roast chicken and i think i finally found it. it is really hard to find a roast chicken that is moist and flavourful, but tucked in the back of the romados bakery, you will find a rotisserie where dozens, if not hundreds, of that elusive tasty chicken is served each day.

frango, extra-spicy – that is what i like. the chicken is juicy and the spices add layers of flavour not usually found with roast chicken. i normally don’t eat the skin, but in this case i made and exception and was not disappointed. the skin was neither dry nor greasy. it was, simply put, perfection.  you can order a whole chicken or you can get a meal.  the meals are available as 1/2 chicken and 1/4 chicken leg or breast.  each meal comes with salad, fries, and rice (or any combination of).  my usual order is the 1/4 chicken leg with salad and fries.  this comes in a compartmentalized styrofoam takeout plate, the chicken and salad hidden under a mountain of fries.  i can usually stretch the 1/4 chicken meal into two sittings.  i tried the rice only once and wasn’t too impressed as it was undercooked.  the french fries on the other hand are delicious and addictive.  they come seasoned with an intriguing blend of spices.  i’m not sure what the mix is, but i’ve heard rumours that it is montreal steak spice.

for dessert, if you have any room left, have a pastel de nata (or pastéis de nata if you’re having more than one).  these are sweet and sticky little portuguese custard tarts.  if you show up before 2pm and order a meal, dessert is included.  whether you get a pastel de nata or a piece of cake is really up to luck.  be warned, once they run out of their little paper bags of bun and dessert, you’ll have to fork over some cash if you want dessert!

also available is pork and sandwiches, none of which i have tried.  it’s just so hard for me not to order the chicken meal.
