i normally steer clear of upscale restaurants that serve architectural food, but it was my sister’s birthday, so i couldn’t say no. i usually go to small eateries that serve huge portions of food that make you wonder if someone’s grandmother is working the kitchen. i definitely did not have to wonder about this place. with their monogrammed plates and their small portions of expertly plated food, i was 99.9% sure that the person cooking was a professional chef that honed their skills at a culinary academy.

as we sat down, we were served a complementary basket of bread. to my surprise, the butter was served on the rocks. not only chilled, but actually lying on top of ice cubes. i thought this was odd, it was a first for me. i didn’t really like it – it made it hard to spread the butter.

everything here is expensive, so i decided on the $45 table d’hôte which gives you an appetizer, a main, dessert, and coffee or tea. for my appetizer, i picked the piroshki. these little russian meat pies were delicately spiced but also full of flavour. i still dream about them. they were so good that i made everybody have a bite.

for the main i went with the lobster ravioli. it may not be russian, but nothing else appealed to me. i regret the choice. for $45, i got five stuffed pastas. five! i know that fancy restaurants serve small portions, but i thought that amount of money would bring me more than a tiny step away from starvation. although i was disappointed, close to angry, about the little bit of food i was served, the ravioli were still good. both the dough and the lobster were fresh. the creamy sauce was also nice and buttery, so to appease my protesting stomach, i mopped up the sauce with the bread rolls.

i chose the blinchiki for dessert. the folded crêpe was stuffed with cheese so creamy, but light, that it was like taking a bite out of a cloud. i wished i could have more… but maybe that’s because the whole meal offered so little food. after all, i am used to eating big servings…

fun fact: i’ve been told that the ladies’ loo has a large mirror across from the toilet. i don’t think anybody really wants to watch themselves answering nature’s call.
