juliette & chocolat – cocoa heaven

it is an unwritten rule that you can’t leave a place called juliette & chocolat without sampling some chocolate. this is a rule i happily followed. to start off, i absolutely wanted to try some real hot chocolate. after perusing the extensive list of chocolate drinks, some containing alcohol, i decided to go simple: chocolat au lait à l’ancienne. this old-fashioned hot chocolate was thick, unctuous, and tasted of nothing but chocolate. after trying this, i don’t think that i can ever go back to instant powder. this drink came in a tiny carafe and i got to pour it into a little bowl before i touched my lips to chocolate. surprisingly, the carafe came with enough melted chocolate to fill the bowl twice. the sad thing is that i only drank half of it. i think that my mistake was to order a dessert crêpe to go with my drink.

for a little more sustenance, i ordered l’antillaise, a crêpe topped with pineapple, banana, and vanilla ice cream. the whole thing was drizzled with dark chocolate, drenched in rum and flambéed. trying to avert a fiery disaster after setting my food on fire, the waitress promptly announces that we have to let the flames die down and under no circumstances are we to blow them out. warning heeded, i dug in. it was good, but i thought the rum was a little overpowering. this comes from someone who doesn’t drink much alcohol, so take that comment with a grain of salt. the best part was the mixture of banana, chocolate, and ice cream. it’s a combination i haven’t had since i was a child. also, the sourness of the pineapple was delicious with the sweet/bitter dark chocolate.

i also had a bite of my friend’s sundae. this giant dish of brownies, strawberries, bananas, ice cream, and chocolate was so much better than my crêpe. the key is to get a little bit of everything in one bite. the medley is simply an explosion of flavour and textures in the mouth. next time i go back, i am definitely getting the sundae.

like i mentioned above, i had trouble finishing my hot chocolate. i don’t know if it was the thickness of the drink or simply because i wasn’t used to having both a chocolate drink and a chocolate covered dessert that was the size of a meal. i’m chalking up my loss of appetite to a chocolate overdose. looking back, i could have probably asked to have to rest of my hot chocolate to go. hindsight’s 20/20, right?
